The Kura Pilot

Background

The Kano River Irrigation Project is one of the largest and most successful irrigation schemes in Nigeria. It is located in Bunkure, Kura and Garum Malam Local Government of Kano State with project office at Kura.

It’s source of water is the Tiga Dam, which provides a perfect setting for gravity irrigation. Its total irrigable area is 22,000 hectares. The goal is to map all individual farm fields in the irrigation area, bringing them into the formal economy.

Earlier this year, we conducted a pilot in the area of interest where we captured 3,000 Farm Fields over a period of 2 Weeks. For each farm field captured, over 20 attributes were recorded. Several hundred workers will be trained to conduct the mapping exercise, The end result will be a statistically representative database with precise geographic information about rural farms that can be used to track trends and adjust government outreach efforts accordingly.

Farmer Associations: get actual size and location of their member farmlands. there by giving them a complete profile of their associationsNIRSAL: de-risk loans to be issued to the farmers by ensuring the lands actually exist in the given sizesFarmer: get access to satellite crop monitoring via SMSMinistry of Agric: get data to help in understanding the farmer/herder clashes and making informed decisions

Field Mapping & Data Capture

We place high value in building trust between us and the communities we map. That’s why at LINX we employ and train field mappers from within the communities we map. This accelerates the mapping process as the community members willingly give us the support we need in getting accurate data.

Public Display & Validation

Un-validated Data is just a bunch of meaningless numbers, That’s why we create innovative ways to validate the massive data sets we capture. One of those ways is by using public displays in which captured data is shown to the public for a certain period to validate their details and that of their neighbors.
